Dear Craig: Please... HELP! "We need ideas on how to encourage more flagging, not less." - Jim Buckmaster, CEO of craigslist
CRAIG'S WORDS:
Millions of postings are removed through community flagging each month, and of these we consistently find that 98-99% are
in violation of the craigslist terms of use or other posted guidelines.
Mr. Newmark, we ask you respectfully: Did you conduct studies? If so, we think they must be outdated. The "gang flaggers" are more numerous and prolific now. Your system has changed and is greatly flawed. It is way out of control and you are condoning it, to the detriment of your users. We experience, and hear from others that they also experience, an inability to get any viable help from craigslist staff in regard to unfairly flagged posts.
Are you sure you're counting EVERYONE?
And... why do you congratulate everyone for flagging? Do you not see the turmoil and loss it causes? Just curious...

Revisiting? New messages post to the bottom I tried multiple times to post an ad to re-home a Chihuahua whose owner died. I took him in, paid to get him neutered, vaccinated and groomed him and posted asking for just a $100 rehoming fee. My post was flagged at least 5-6 times and now I have just given up. I went to the Help Forum each time and worded my ad exactly to their specifications, yet still my ad was flagged within moments of appearing on line. Every single time. First I was told my post was too wordy so I changed it. Then I was told to leave out the part about paying to get him neutered, vaccinated and groomed. Then I was told to put it back in. Then I was told to leave out the rehoming fee. Then I was told to put it back in. Then I was told twice to wait 48 hours before reposting. Finally I simply cut and pasted text that the Help Forum people gave me and AGAIN I was flagged. Ughhh! It was exhausting. I think the flaggers are psychopaths, plain and simple. Good luck with your cause. But I sincerely doubt Craig Newmark cares about any of this since, as you mentioned, this all increases the frequency of hits.

Thanks for your efforts to curb fanatical flagging. It is so frustrating. We ran a horse rescue, and could never keep our ads up due to crazy flaggers. I emailed Craig and did get a response, but never saw a difference in flagging. We had our non-profit status but it didn't help us. I can only imagine how much harder it makes it for dog and cat rescues. I will help you any way I can. Good luck.

Hello. I got flagged 3 times for posting an ad soliciting donations of animals to a public school. I also received a lot of abusive e-mail about public elementary schools doing animal experiments and giving animals to shelters at the end of the school year! I asked readers to engage me in dialog, a few did, but still I got flagged. Here is our post: Hello. We are a group of teachers at a public school (PK, K, 1st, 3rd). We would gratefully receive any small animals - reptiles, amphibians, insects, arachnids, and fish - that you would care to donate to our classrooms. Not necessary but greatly appreciated if there is a complete setup. We can give you a tax receipt if you like. Sorry, no mammals. I added this after getting so many flags: Please do not be offended or upset by this ad. FYI, teachers are, in general, highly educated (we mostly all have a master's degree), reasonably intelligent, responsible and socially conscious. We tend to be underpaid, California is 43rd in the country in per-pupil funding, and we do not have the materials we need. In fact, we are expected to spend our own money supplementing the district-provided materials. It is we teachers who teach the children to be responsible and to respect themselves, others, animals, and even the planet (e.g., recycling, Earth Day coming soon). It is up to us to make the learning fun and interesting, more than just lectures and worksheets. We NEED to provide hands-on materials and real-life experiences in order for the children to learn. So, please, help us out. None of these animals will ever be given up to a shelter! If you are still concerned, please feel free to write and engage in a dialog.

I get flagged almost every time I post, particularly in the pet section. I post a lot for other people who do not have access to a computer. There are a lot of people, especially with this failing economy, who can no longer care for the pets they love. Craigslist used to be a place where good people tried to help other good people. It is nothing more than a cult-like meeting place for those who claim to be pet lovers who are causing the death of more and more pets everyday that might have a chance to find a loving home... please forward me your website address and I will post it religiously. If there is anything else I can do to help curb this flag fest, please let me know!!! Gratefully,
Amber
I have been flagged numerous times for the silliest things with no explanation. Nothing that has been damaging, just severely annoying. I recently moved to a home with a smaller garage. I was selling items at very low prices. I had a large stand up fan, in perfect condition. I just didn’t have the room to store it anymore and I got flagged several times. I had it for sale for $5.00. I could only assume that these people flagging felt I should simply give away any items I may not have any room for. Never mind that I worked hard to buy everything I was selling at a fraction of the cost. Thank you.

I posted on Craig's list the rescued birds I was placing and got flagged 4 times. So, I still have the baby birds.

I posted an ad on craigslist in hopes of finding the right dog. The post included the fact that I had done my research, that I am experienced and can train, a homeowner with a yard, a stable income and the ability to provide a forever home. I made it clear that I was willing to pay a reasonable fee. I offered all the qualities needed for a good home and I was flagged EVERY SINGLE TIME! It took me several months to finally find what I wanted, but it wasn’t as a result of an ad I had placed... they were flagged! I still wonder how many dogs were sent to the pound because my ad couldn't be seen. Flaggers have gotten out of hand with their ideas of who should and should not be allowed to post. Craigslist has been contaminated by flaggers!
Roni, Sandy, OR
I occasionally flag. But only when it is an obvious BYB. As well, I have seen some over-flag abuse. I am not sure who is over-flagging, but I agree that it should be less fanatical. Thanks,
Clementine, Portland, OR
This really has gotten out of control. I can't even post an ad following ALL rules for CL without beng flagged for one reason or another. Its a shame, but I won't be using this site anymore until the problem is somehow resolved.
Justin
I get AGGRAVATED AND FRUSTRATED clicking on posts just to get the message: "This posting has been flagged for removal." Craigslist has gone downhill with these nuts playing power/control games with regular users.

I started posting for a local animal rescue in early 2007. My posts kept getting flagged and deleted so I went into the Flagging Forum for advice. I received very specific advice to give more information about the organization, link to our web site, show 501c status etc., which I implemented. Then in Nov/Dec the posts started again getting flagged and deleted. I went back into the forum for help and I was BERATED and told I was "pimping my organization" for taking the very advice given in that very forum. Since then my posts are flagged and deleted on a regular basis, I was told by members in the Flag Help Forum that "craigslist is not for your rescue group." Why not? We have a Petfinders site but craigslist is very helpful in the most urgent situations. I post only local dogs and all of our animals have all the basics like microchips, vet exams, spay/neuter and they are up to date on their vaccines. It gets really, really discouraging when sweet, deserving rescue animals are actively prevented from finding homes on craigslist.
Melanie, San Francisco, CA
I volunteer for a rescue group. We post for shelters and rescue groups in NYC. There is a group of unprofessional people out there turning this into a disaster and sometimes life sentences for animals in need. Not only do they flag you unfairly, they also send you deplorable emails. Today I posted a cat looking for a home and received a reply from a guy who said, “What a crock of bullshit this is.... You got some nerve posting this.... Why don’t you make cat soup?” I tried to go to the Forum in regard to a post that was flagged. Since the post followed all the guidelines, I was told to repost. I was flagged again. The dog I was posting for was euthanized. If I had not been flagged, maybe that dog would be alive and in a home. I hope Craig can see the negative impact the flaggers are having on Craigslist.
Sincerely,
Mary, New York City, NY
There are many things Craig could do to make it harder for serial flaggers to abuse the system. Have you read about paid flaggers? You'll find it online somewhere. My ads are targeted constantly. Not remotely outside the terms. I have gotten abusive and harassing messages as well. I posted nothing for two days, then today one ad was hit 3 times in a row and the system won't let me post anything now. How about requiring EVERY user to have an account and limit the number of times they can flag? By allowing and enabling this ongoing harassment, is CL not violating people's freedom of speech?

This is fantastic. I am a big fan of craigslist, and even got my rescue pup off of this great site. But sadly, it is true that the flagging has gotten out of control. I have had to report one craigslist user to the San Diego Police Department for cyber harassment, and to AOL (the user's ISP) in order for the harassment to stop. I am afraid to post! (I offer foster homes for rescues that are running out of room, but also do a little pet sitting.) I have emailed abuse @ craigslist.org and received a response in terms of advice/ Not sure if you have explored this avenue or not. Please feel free to pass this email on regarding my negative experience with craigslist, because like I said earlier, without this site I wouldn't have the greatest thing in my life: my yellow lab rescue. Keep up the great work! Kind Regards,
Maureen, San Diego, CA
CL should really clarify what constitutes a re-homing fee and when a re-homing fee becomes a sale. Having observed the debate for awhile it seems clear that there is a wide range of opinions. One extreme says that any fee is too much. Indeed, one poster claims that any dog that is not a pure bred is worthless. The same poster goes on to brag about the amount of money put into their “worthless” dog. Clearly, most would agree that no dog is worthless. Yet there is a vocal minority who are really offended by any re-homing fee. Yet another extreme claims that the re-homing fee should be what ever the person asks for and can get (free market). These people are constantly being flagged for re-homing fees that others believe are way too high. Most reasonable people are in the middle. They want a decent, loving home for their animal. They realize a modest re-homing fee serves as a screening device to weed out the weirdoes, collectors, and the financially unfit. They also realize that the ability to pay a re-homing fee is just one tool in the screening process - home visits and references are also good ideas, as well as some sort of contract preventing re-sale of the pet. The problem is with Craigslist. On the one hand they encourage a modest re-homing fee, yet on the other hand they prohibit sales. What is a modest re-homing fee? Some say $50 - $200. Others think that too high. Still others claim that $400 - $500 is not unreasonable given the breed, etc. As long as this problem goes unanswered there will continue to be controversy. What say you Craig? What say you reader?

Hi. I have been posting dogs at the pound on craigslist for the past 2 years, getting flagged repeatedly, so I just sit around the clock putting them back up again. I noticed lately though, the ads I make won't even ever appear on the craigslist list. last night I made like 6 ads and none appeared. Can mean people mark my ads as "spam" so that I can't post anything at all any more? I even tried using my other email address, AND changing the ad. nothing appeared. This really concerns me because there is a dog at the pound who is absolutely desperate for a home and has been there the longest. Recently I posted ads on the pet section looking for a Pit Bull puppy. EVERY single ad I posted was deleted, as well as numerous others of people who contacted me. I did end up finding a female puppy, and she is an adored member of our family, but the person who was posting these puppies got flagged as well. This also happened with another person from whom we got another female puppy. At first I thought it was only because I was looking for a Pit Bull puppy that my postings got flagged, but it doesn't matter what breed it is-people get flagged on this site for no reason, who are not breaking any rules. I do have to say, though, that if it has any mention of a "Pit Bull" in the ad, the postings get flagged almost immediately. This needs to be put to a stop.

We've been flagged even though we note that a cat is a rescue from a high kill-rate shelter, even though every one we list is fixed and vaccinated, even though we have super low adoption fees. And we never know why. It seems if I equate a cat with a purebred type, i.e., "Siamese mix" or "Maine Coon type," we get flagged. We really don't get it. We're a small rescue that does 100+ adoptions a year, all volunteers, no funding. We fund the rescue effort ourselves from our day jobs. We work really hard at this and have found craigslist a great way to reach potential adopters throughout the Bay Area. But we get flagged and never understand why. I talked to a potential adopter who posted a "wanted" ad for a cat. They got flagged too, and they had no clue why. We don't offer unaltered or underage animals. We don't ask crazy adoption fees. We sure as h*ll are not breeders. We're just trying to save animals from kill shelters and life on the streets. Please work with us on this. Our intentions are good and I really like to think that the flaggers have the best of intentions too.

I am a volunteer with a dog rescue. Our mission is to try and find homes for dogs that only have a couple of days to live. This is the last chance these dogs have. It is important that our message gets to as many people as possible in the dog’s final hours. Sunday, I posted about 17 ads and they were all flagged within the hour. These were posted in Orange County. Yesterday, I posted several in Sacramento and all but two were flagged. The two that remained up brought in four replies, so Craig's List works when the postings are allowed to stay up! I posted on Orange County, asking the flaggers to quit and that didn't even seem to get up before it was flagged. Craigs List is for the general public, as I understand it, but this frustrating practice has made it available to only a few who obviously have an agenda. I'm asking you to do what you can to regulate this, so everyone can have a fair shot at this message board. Dogs are dying that don't need to die. Thank you.

I'm looking to rescue and adopt a pet NOT run into FLAGGED messages!! I would go to a shelter but I work during shelter hours. My only days off, shelters are closed. So I choose to look on Craigslist. BUT.... I keep running into flagged ads. What is with this? Is there a perp on this site that spends his/her day flagging ads just out of spite? I am trying to adopt a special dog who needs a home and all I keep getting are FLAGGED posts and no information about the dog. Who ever keeps doing this, you are causing dogs to run out of time! And you think you are protecting an animal??

Hi, I've posted several ads on craigslist without breaking any of the rules and I still get flagged. Why is this? I think that some of the people that are on craigslist are just there to start fights and cause TROUBLE. Can you please deal with these people? I'm so tired of wasting my time to make out ads just for them to get removed by these people that have nothing better to do but flag innocent peoples’ ads. I've already started using other websites like www.kijiji.com because of this problem. Can anything be done to stop these people from being so mean and rude? Craigslist has been very useful in the past, but now it is becoming quite frustrating, to say the least. The Pets section is mainly the targeted area, but other sections are being hit by these "flaggers" as well. I find craigslist to be very valuable in saving pets lives, the earth (by recycling items), making friends and finding jobs for my children. But if the "flaggers" continue to take control, the site will be useless. If a program can be made so a select group controls the flagging, I will volunteer right now. Please save this site!

When I first began using Craigslist, I'd just left Job Corps, and they told us you can find anything on Craigslist at a reasonable price, and you can find all sorts of job opportunities and opportunities to volunteer, apartments, pets, anything. That was about seven years ago. My former roommates and I found a house on this site, found furniture on this site, and I did most of my volunteer work off of this site. I even made a few friends off of this site. My partner got here from out-of-country, and we elected to adopt a dog. We fostered two, to see what having a pet of that size would be like. After the two were homed, we saw a dog on here who was a death row dog. She was 25 dollars. She is a pitbull mix. We have had her for over a year now. Just before picking up our pitbull mix at the house we got her from, I encountered a stray kitten no bigger than a softball. It happened to be the day (a February ago) that it snowed a LOT. I couldn't watch him freeze, and he was all alone. So I brought him in- I didn't like cats, but my wife asked "can we keep him". I said "No." and more than a year later, he's still a part of our family. A year later, we saw on Craigslist that there was a litter of kittens that no one had claimed, and that they needed homes. We went and got one, and six months later he is still a part of our family. Seven months after we got that free kitten off of Craigslist, my wife had begged for months for a small breed puppy for our bigger one to play with now that we're no where near her dog-friends we used to live around. So for 200 dollars, off of Craigslist, I found a beautiful little boy Pomeranian mix. He fit right in. So. That’s: Two free kittens, One $25 dollar dog, and one $200 dollar dog. Our pets are spoiled. They have their own furniture. They go to the Hondo dog park every single weekend both days. They come to Lowes with us, they come camping with us, they do everything with us. On my Sunday nights, I bake them Isabooscotti. Friday, I'll be ordering a giant cat tree for the boys. For six months, I made the pit mix her own food because she's allergic to everything. One last thing, I was poor through almost all of this, until I started a job about six months ago with the hospital. I mean dirt-floor poor. I am the only person in my home who works. I can assure you, our animals have always been and always will be taken care of well. And our apartment is always clean. As of late, I've noticed that more than offers of help, or animals looking for homes, there are criticisms, arguments, and self righteous threats towards other people who post. Honestly, I will not be using this site anymore. I've seen this going on for months now. When I was looking for our puppy, I was literally harassed by people on here. When asking advice on my dogs behaviors, I was harassed and criticized for them. She was 1 and a half when I got her. She was being put down BECAUSE of those behaviors. These people in this section seem to really overlook the ad, see what they think would be wonderful fodder for a berating email, and go for it. I can't count how many times I've had to repeatedly say "Please read the entire post." Criticisms for spelling? For re-homing? Ridiculous. I would never re-home my pets, but I can understand how others would wind up needing to for the better of their animal. I don't think it's all justified, I don't believe most of these people really HAVE to get rid of their pets, but I understand. Who are we to criticize? Who are we to INSIST on how much someone should CHARGE for their pet? Or that they should charge AT ALL. My advice to you people is to go to the volunteer section, find yourself something to do for OTHERS, and make yourself feel validated. Trust me, it'd be a much better way of getting your satisfaction than trolling the pet section and adding to the unnecessary negativity that goes on in here, much less in the world. I think the Friday Sharing is a wonderful thing. It's the one day a week where the focus is more success than failure. It's terribly sad to see someone so bitter and angry and bored that they need to criticize that too. If you take THAT much ownership in this section of a PUBLIC WEBSITE, you need to break free of the computer and Internet altogether and find something to occupy your time OUTSIDE in the real world. I don't care what your reasoning is for spending so much time flagging, and reposting negativity towards others over and over again. There's no reason whatsoever. To those of you who are helpful, and friendly to others, and doing good for animals AND people: thank you. To those of you who can care only about animals because you have terrible people skills, your hearts are in the right place, but you need to learn how to communicate better and possibly seek medication for your anger issues. I got my pets at free, low price, and high price. Made no difference to me what we did or didn't pay- they are our family and we take good care of them. I support my family, and did when I was broke. All other parts of Craigslist, I will continue to use, but never again this one, because it truly is a depressing place to be.

CL has a big problem w/ cyber bullies. These people flag adds that they find objectionable. They take pleasure in abusing legitimate users of the site who are trying to find or re-home a pet. They want to enforce their own twisted sense of right and wrong on everyone else. Clearly they are pathetic cowards with no life of their own who ultimately harm the animals they pretend to care about. They exclaim that $100, $200, or $300 is an "outrageous" fee. They fail to realize while that amount may appear outrageous to them, it may be perfectly reasonable to someone else. The fact that they want to prevent the animal from finding a home by flagging the ad indicates their true colors. These people are garden-variety bullies, and like most bullies they are cowards. They hide behind anonymous flagging, leaving only the stench of their mean spirit. I placed a perfectly appropriate posting on the pets section in Portland, OR. This posting addressed my concern about people who pose as being interested in adopting pets, and then use these animals in puppy mills or sell them to research labs, or use the animal as dog fighting bait - in other words people with sinister intentions. In my post, I made recommendations on how to lower the odds that such people could get their hands on these pets. The posting was perfectly appropriate for the pets section, and was an informational piece to educate people who of course would never want to see their pets meet such horrid fates. Your flagging system is so liberal, and loose, it invites abusive flaggers. I have not seen so much abusive flagging in the activities, artists, non-profit, or other categories, as I have in the "pets" section. Abusive flaggers do as they please, and there are no consequences. I think CL is great, and I thank you for the service. However, your pets section is a DREAM for people who would harm pets, and there apparently is no way to educate those who unsuspectingly give their pets to these people. Please - I beg you, post warning/guidance info at the top of every pet section in the country. And, rid yourself of these rogue, abusive flaggers. Thanks. Between the flaggers, scammers and no-shows, I don't know why I'm still using craigslist other than the fact that's it's free and I still have some honest buyers out there. I have been posting on Craig's list in Houston and Dallas trying to find my two lost huskies and I keep getting flagged. I just want my dogs back! I miss them desperately. Why does my post keep getting flagged? I have to continuously repost and check my email every 15-30 min to keep my ad up. What’s wrong with this ad for a new family member? I am a stay at home mom for my 11-month-old daughter. My husband is stationed overseas with the Army. My daughter loves to go on walks and we have amazing grounds here. I would like a dog under a year old (the younger the better) and female. She can be spayed or not; either way, she's going to be a pet, not bred. I want a dog to play ball and Frisbee with. Go to the beach with. I also have 2 cats and my daughter is great with them and loves all dogs! We have to put a $400 deposit down with our apartment complex so I can't afford these huge re-homing fees or breeder fees (Army doesn't pay that great). It’s not really anybody else's business as to how much someone sells or re-homes their animal for. People have been breeding and selling animals for decades and it certainly isn’t going to stop because some people on craigslist don’t think it’s “acceptable.” If you don’t want to pay the price of an animal that someone has listed, go on to the next one. Seems to me that there are just a lot of people on here that want something for nothing. It also seems there are a lot of people on here that need more fulfilling lives. It’s pretty sad when you hit “sheriff” status on craigslist. Maybe flaggers should take some of the time they spend “policing” CL and donate it to the local humane society or animal shelter. This person keeps flagging and flagging all day! They run people down and spread hate. Goodness gracious! Why don't they spread the love and try to praise good things instead of running down and flagging others. People don't need to hear negative opinions and thoughts, there's enough of that in the news. Share yourself with the world, make friends, even online ones. People would love you and accept you if you stopped being so judgmental and critical. Have a wonderful day!

That is sad that I get flagged for looking for a dog for Search And Rescue!! This is what saves peoples’ lives and finds children and adults when they are missing! I have one question for the people that flagged my ad... What are you doing to help the community and what will you be able to do if 911 hits here? We spend our free time being trained and going to school so we are prepared help our community during any type of disaster and hopefully save lives! We don't get paid for any of this... it all comes out of our pockets and takes time from our families!!!

I wish flaggers would get a life. If I choose to put an item in the general category instead of one that is more specific, I have that right. My items get lost among the very technical items in the computer category. Someone who may not be thinking specifically of computers will not see my item but may see it in the general section and realize they could use that. I'm NOT breaking any rules - my post is not hurting or offending anyone. Use your time to do something about the bigger problems in this world - not whether somebody is posting exactly as you want them to!

I am looking for a puppy and they won't STOP FLAGGING ME! I am looking for a pitbull puppy... and put an ad on here and am already getting flagged. Come on… just because some people don’t like this breed doesn’t mean they can’t be good pets. I have had 3 of these animals from red nose, blue nose and brindle. They are loving and it depends on who raises them so please don’t flag me. We are a married couple seeking to adopt a child. Our ad does not violate C.L. terms but the CL terms ARE violated when flaggers remove our ad. It’s ridiculous that someone spends their day flagging ads when it’s not necessary.

Flagging is completely out of control on m4m personals. No matter how simply you make your ad, the flaggers flag it. Like "Doctor/Patient Role Play." What is offensive with that? Flaggers remind me of the Taliban in Afghanistan who want to control what a person can do and say. I can't believe craigslist has fallen to that level. I thought craigslist was above this level of censorship. You would think we are living in the Middle East. Craig: reign in your out-of-control flaggers.

I spoke to Craig and evidently, they don't give a hoot because they feel the community police's the site plus he would not tell me who has been flagging me or why my post constantly gets flagged.

Dear Craig, I’m still looking for a pet on this site.... and this is what I see..... Do you actually pay people to flag people that have ads over 50 bucks? I’m really confused about your goal with this site. What are your true intentions here? Do you not care about the turmoil this site causes when people are either looking for pets or to re-home? Seriously... what is the deal and are you doing anything about it? Do you care? The pet section is out of control. The official craigslist rules do not stipulate a dollar amount for re-homing fees. Revisiting? New messages post to the bottom I am so tired of getting flagged for no reason. One time I posted a Washer and Dryer for free there was nothing wrong with it other than the age of the machine. It was flagged and removed within an hour of posting. I ended up posting it 7 times before I gave up and put it on our local Freecycle group. My friend and I also run a local animal rescue for small mammals. Like rats, cats, we have even had a wallaby and a pair of sugar gliders. We try to post our cats on there and typically they are deleted within a few hours or by the next day. Its a very frustrating cycle that I really hope can be broken. I will post your website address everywhere I can. I truly believe that those people need to get a real life and stop harassing people. What you are doing is awesome! I have sent this on to a lot of the rescue sites I belong to, people who depend on craigslist to get the word out! We are so happy someone is FINALLY doing something! I am a volunteer for an animal rescue group. I have been posting on craigslist to help save dogs from being euthanized. I post them on craigslist to help find them forever homes before it is too late. I post and post and I keep getting flagged! Why, I have no idea. But this is getting on my nerves and this needs to stop. These people have no right to control everything on craigslist and they certainly don’t have the right to flag whoever they want to just because. I also posted on craigslist to find volunteers and again I got flagged. This has gotten ridiculous and if it doesn't stop I will rely on a different site for my postings. Thank You. Recently I made a posting for my puppy. I was flagged the following day after posting the message. It was very upsetting that my posting was flagged because I am in dire need to find a home for my German rott, and it's upsetting enough that I can not keep her. However, it is that much more upsetting when some "nobody" with nothing more to do with there free time then disrupt and utterly annoy a person who's going through enough already. Here my husband and I are trying to find a home for our puppy and someone does this to us. I have had numerous postings flagged, some within a minute or two of posting, when I was looking for a dog. I believe it may have been because I was looking for a Pit puppy, but it is no matter. These dogs and others get put to sleep every minute, and I was looking for a family member. It really pissed me off when my postings got flagged numerous times. I eventually got a puppy, and she is a loved, healthy member of our family. It is time to put a stop to these people with no lives! Thank you!! I am fed up with craigslist. I’m switching to www.Kijiji.com Craigslist is on a downward spiral - it's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN. I was trying to re-home a registered Chinese crested. No matter how it was worded, it was flagged. This was not a puppy or litter of puppies - he is a 3-year-old. I get e-mails from people to tell me to post the re-homing fee or I will be flagged, others say don't post it or you will be flagged. Either way it still gets flagged. I would like to know who these flaggers are so all of us that are flagged can thank them for killing all the pets that we could not find homes for on craigslist and they end up in a shelter. I think it is terrible that these flaggers can sleep at night. They need to go and work at an over-crowded shelter and watch as these poor pets die. I have been an avid CL participant for YEARS. In recent months, I have not only witnessed abusive and unruly flagging, but have, myself, been a victim of verbal assault via e-mail. I used CL to look for my past homes and never had a problem. Using the "pet" community section, though, has been a horrific experience. I have used it to offer my assistance in fostering animals, seeking a personal pet, and obtaining training for my dog. I will not use CL until I see some kind of governing to eliminate these CYBER VIGILANTES!! I have been in the veterinary industry for 18 yrs, both in private practice and as a volunteer for multiple rescue organizations. I also belong to four canine organizations. I want you to know, Craig, that I have spread the word about the posting assaults, abuse, and illegitimate flagging, and warned multiple individuals, as well as organizations, and animal-related businesses to not advertise on CL. I have given them links to other sites where they can advertise without being harassed and abused. CL is your brainchild. At one time, your list was a phenomenal resource. Now, it is being used as a forum for abusive and sick individuals. If you want your users to come back, you must find away to shut down this abusive flagging!!! Sincerely, Re this post: "PETS is for adoption only.... Flag all other ads! - (SEA/TAC )" Supposedly non-rescue, inexperienced Craigslist self-appointed police who have nothing better to do but flag posts, should take that time to volunteer with the rescues that are saving the homeless pets from death in shelters, paying with our money for spay/neuter/shots/microchip/food/medical care needed/transportation/and all costs to get these poor angels homes. And their statement about doing their homework to check on posts to see if they are valid rescues is false, because they have removed our 9 yr 501c3 legit special needs rescue posts over and over without ever checking our references, seeing our success stories that show how hard we work and how hard it is to get these homeless pets homes that people have thrown away and they harm our work, they keep these homeless pets from getting homes and hence more dogs and cats have to die in the shelters. SO INSTEAD OF PLAYING SELF-APPOINTED JUDGES, WHY NOT WORK WITH RESCUES TO LIST THE LEGITIMATE RESCUES HERE? Craig, even you have told us you don’t like this but don’t know how to stop them from hurting good nonprofit rescues from doing our difficult and time-consuming volunteer work. WE don't have time to keep reposting our legit rescue posts. And FYI: some of our special needs and disabled rescues have cost over $500 and we need to be reimbursed with adoption fees that high sometimes or we can't help more!!!!!!!!!!! I've been looking for a small dog to love, what’s wrong with that? One woman here had a Chihuahua and was looking for a good family for a small re-homing fee. There was nothing wrong with that post. I wanted that dog but since it got flagged she never got my message. That's just bull! It also upsets me when I see people getting flagged for no reason by ignorant people who have nothing better to do. How is it that a FLAGGER can keep me from finding an Australian shepherd? I want one, but apparently I’m not allowed to, per the flagger! Why not???? I would really like to know! I am a volunteer with the humane society and EVERY single one of my posts are being flagged within minutes. The flag help forum won't help and when I get help from the pet discussion forum, I change and try every way suggested. NOTHING WORKS! Yesterday was my last attempt. I have two posts on here for just under a month and decided to delete them and repost. I deleted, reposted and then I was flagged within five minutes THEY WERE ON FOR A MONTH PRIOR and no one flagged them, except for now all my lost, found, and adoption ads are gone in a few minutes. I have been quite successful in using CL for a year and now nothing I post stays. I was simply trying to re-home my pom puppy and was flagged over 10 times no matter what email I used and no matter what the ad did or did not say. I was being harassed and if there were some way to find out who my harasser was/is I would surely report them to the police. It is plain harassment and I will NEVER use craigslist again unless it is to find an item. It’s just not worth it to me. I will use the other websites out there that DON’T allow the users to flag. WHY AM I BEING FLAGGED??? HERE’S MY POST: A loving family looking to adopt an adult or puppy. We own our home and plan on keeping the dog as an indoor pet. But I do have a large fenced-in back yard. We do not have any other pets, so this dog would be loved and spoiled. Thank you in advance. I DO NOT SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS POST I WAS FLAGGED 10 TIMES!!!!!! WHY???? Carpet cleaners cannot post an ad for their services for more than 4 or 5 minutes on Craigslist Sea-Tac without getting flagged. I tried posting an ad on Sunday, and every time I put it up, it was immediately flagged down. I watched all day long as carpet cleaning ads appeared, just to disappear the next time I checked, usually within a half hour or so. One ad had its phone # in the title with a note: “Call fast before my competitor deletes me.” Someone is in complete control of the carpet cleaning advertising on Craigslist for the Seattle-Tacoma area, making sure no one’s ad stays up long enough to generate any business. If you send a message in the “Help” section about this, you don’t get a response. Neither do you get a response if you send a complaint to the Craigslist legal department. I am giving up on Craigslist. Personally, I think the flagging system is stupid. I can’t believe it is still in use. My ad for a homeless cat was flagged – they should hang their heads in shame. They are really unbelievable. I AM NOT selling this cat so what is the problem? I will be asking a small re-homing fee to be sure she doesn't end up with a "buncher" or sold to a laboratory but that is not selling. This cat is running out of time and they are on a power trip--shame on them. But, I will just keep re-posting until the job gets done. Question: I've just come on here for the first time in about a month, why are there so few ads? There used to be a ton, but now two and a half days fit on one page. What happened? I would like to thank the flaggers for flagging my ad even though there was nothing wrong with it. She was spayed, UTD on shots, but needed to be the only dog, why you flagged my ad I don't know I was just trying to find her home. I mean how many other ads on here say free to good home, and those are not flagged. Well thanks to you she was euthanized yesterday. Thanks Craigslist for helping out yet another dog.

I'm so glad something is being done by someone. I've wondered how to go about getting flaggers off CL. My story: All I want is a puppy for my grandmother. I keep posting saying its okay if the animal is spayed, I don't want to breed it. I'm willing to pay a re-homing fee, sign a contract and give vet references, etc... My only stipulation... It has to be a small breed dog. My grandmother can't handle a large dog. Is this so unreasonable? So why am I being flagged? Because Craig's List put the power in the people's hands and unfortunately there are power-hungry people out there who just like messing up people's days. Hooray for you for trying to make a change. I hope something is done and I would be more than happy to help anyway I can.

About 3 months ago we re-homed our Russian turtle. Originally asking $15 for his adoption fee. There was an identical post by someone else that was never flagged. They had had their posting up about 4 days when we put ours up. We couldn’t compete with the flaggers. Within seconds of re-posting it was flagged again. We played this game for an entire afternoon. I even put out a “what the heck is wrong with my post, help me and I’ll change it” post. I re-read all the rules and laws, and I was not doing anything wrong. We were very frustrated. Luckily someone saw the post right before it was flagged and posted a note to me which I saw and responded to. It was a very bad and sad craigslist experience. We love CL and buy and sell a lot of things. I recommend CL to everyone I know who needs somewhere to sell or buy things and doesn’t want to deal with e-bay or others. I was one of the first CL users in PDX! Craig: Thanks for all you do-but help us fix this!

Hi. I am the only person willing to post the animals at the pound on craigslist consistently. I post the most urgent cases where the animal’s life is in danger. I have to sit at my computer around the clock, practically being obsessed, because my ads are continuously removed, and I need to try to keep up with the flaggers. I get very frustrated. And I feel guilty whenever I leave my house because I know that while I am gone the ad will be taken down and the animal’s chances of surviving have slimmed. It is a very sad thing. Craigslist has been the only thing that has saved some animals who have been at the pound. It is the only way to draw attention to an animal who has gotten overlooked for months. And they are great animals! I do put flyers up around town, but craigslist is so popular that it can be the only thing that can save them sometimes.

I HATE flaggers and have my items I'm trying to sell flagged ALL the time. For no reason at all! So I would love to pass along your message and website! Thanks a lot!!

Wrote to CL tonight about an ad I have been placing for puppies needing a good home. Ever since I posted another one saying I hoped a big dog pooped on the flagger's pillow, my ads are flagged within 10 mins of being placed! A few months back I placed info about a cookbook that I am selling for my friend and the folks in the forum, in answer to my question why I was flagged is that the ad was too professional. Huh? Something needs to be done! It may eventually come to leaving these folks to their devices and watching the decline of an otherwise great idea!

We have a refuge for Macaw Parrots and we get our posting flagged within minutes at times. Our ad says, “Macaw Island Refuge; FOR PROTECTION and REHABILITATION of ABUSED and UNWANTED MACAW PARROTS. PERMANENT HOME ENVIRONMENT SPECIFICALLY for the MACAW PARROT.” Driven by our love for all animals... contact us at www.macawislandrefuge.com We spend a lot of time and money to help these animals and we are trying to make a difference. We get zero help financially from the public! These birds come from very abusive situations and need our help. We are the only EXCLUSIVE Macaw refuge anywhere around and people see our posting on craigslist, it has saved many lives, however, our ad has been flagged at least 50 times, and who knows who may have been looking for our help. We are sick of these EVIL people trying to stand in our way of helping these animals. Something MUST be done! The ONLY way to fix the problem is to have TRAINED CRAIGSLIST STAFF flag inappropriate postings, and remove access of flagging from these abusive, empty and disturbed people. They are not fit for a responsibility like flagging. It's a GAME to them at the expense of animals' lives and peoples' feelings. We have also been sworn at and abused many times, this too MUST have a consequence when we turn in a complaint, such as banning from Craigslist, which NEVER HAPPENS! Craig will make more money with happy users, than this mess. Respectfully submitted,

I, too, have experienced unrelenting flagging of ads for shelter dogs in the pets section, particularly in Sacramento. None of the posts are in violation of any of the terms of use of CL, adoption fee is stated as well as photos and descriptions of the dogs. Of particular concern are Staffordshire terrier mixes that I try to network out of the shelter. Often times if "Staffie" is even in the title of the posting, it is flagged. However, today I had an ad for a golden retriever mix puppy flagged off twice already, she is a shelter dog and is on the shelter’s euthanasia list. It is completely out of control and is seriously affecting the ability of rescues and shelters to get dogs into adoptive homes. I personally never flag an ad for a pet unless it is just a gross violation of CL terms of use and obviously posted by a breeder. It is really out of control.... Any help from the CL staff would be much appreciated.

I was flagged multiple times for a simple post asking if there were any horse stables in my area. Can't imagine what is wrong with that.... Thanks for taking the initiative and good luck!

My ads go down almost as soon as they go up, including my requests for help. These ads are well within TOU.

I rescue the meat pigeons at San Francisco ACC that are scheduled to be euthanized and foster them until great homes are found and adoptions completed. I used to post once a week but lately it is too much of a pain. This is my post: King Pigeons (also called Utility pigeons) Make Great Pets. They are raised in crates and then sold at live food markets (ever eat squab?). But some escape or are set "free" and the few that, despite having no skills and being poor fliers, survive the dogs, cars, hawks, starvation, etc. end up in animal shelters. Having escaped the butcher, survived the streets and dodged euthanasia, they are very lucky birds. And they are great pets. They are sweet, smart, calm and full of personality. They can be kept indoors as family pets or live in your aviary or coop. It has been flagged down 3 times in the last 3 days. I added this note to flaggers after the first two times: Why would you flag someone trying to re-home rescued pigeons? Please don't. Contact me and let me know what your issue is. To my understanding, there is nothing inappropriate in this post.

I'm a volunteer for a new rescue group. I am very annoyed and disgusted about the amount of flagging and nasty emails I have received. It makes me upset and angry knowing that these people have nothing better to do and they can get away with this. It's not fair for people who are trying to find homes for these animals that desperately need forever homes. We are trying to save lives and have to deal with these people who could care less about the welfare of animals. These flaggers are killing these animals and they need to be stopped. A few days ago I posted for about 3 hours and most of my ads were flagged. I'm doing this on my own time and in return it's a waste of time.Your website is great but you need to change some things so that people can't flag for no good reason at all. If this continues a lot of people are going to search for new websites to post on. Please, Craig… help us fix this problem! Let us save these animals instead of having them get euthanized because we are unable to get this word out! Thanks so much for taking the time to read my thoughts and feelings.

HEY... THIS IS FABULOUS! I and many of my friends, have been the victims many times over from these thugs on craigslist. They flag and flag and flag. I am also sick to death of it. They even flag the posts asking for help. I am NOT going to give up. Idiots! Makes me want to never go back to that site again, ever!! I have written to dear old Craig no telling how many times to no avail. He doesn’t seem to care... I will do anything you need of me to help stop these crazy Nazi people from continuing to flag. I was even threatened to be banned from craigslist for continued posting. I turned around and posted that same post back on the site. She was so upset. I will help. Thanks for your help. We are, incidentally, parrot sanctuary rescuers. We are trying to do our part...

I don't understand why my postings are getting flagged. I have tried different ways to explain what we are doing to try to find these dogs homes. I have posted our website address to show that we are a legitimate rescue that finds homes for abandoned and abused pets. We live in a remote, economically depressed area where people tend to not care for pets properly and rarely get them spayed and neutered. We try to get puppies and kittens before they are indiscriminately given out to homes where they will be allowed to breed and contribute to the pet overpopulation. We spay and neuter them, get their vaccinations, microchip them and screen homes before sending them out. Our group takes elderly and disabled pets from shelters where they are on the euthanasia list because lots of other rescues only take the ones that are highly adoptable. We sanctuary the un-adoptable ones and care for them for the rest of their lives. We rescue from the reservation where many of the dogs have demodex mange and live miserable lives without treatment. Our only goal is to find homes for as many as possible. Please explain why you are flagging us, just because we have managed to get some small puppies that we have sterilized and made ready for adoption. Even our three little pit girls that we saved from living on the streets on the reservation were flagged. We have them spayed and socialized. What can we do to try to find them homes? Please, whoever is doing the flagging, tell me what I'm doing wrong. Thank you.

I have my own rescue group. I rescue red-listed dogs and cats, I bring them into my own home, and I nurse them back to health (because I always get the sick and injured animals), and then I find them new homes. All of my credit cards are maxed out because of all the vet bills for the animals I pull from the shelter. I even had to have 2 expensive surgeries done on 2 different dogs, and all this money comes out of my own pocket. The only way I can get some of this money back, and afford to do what I do, is by charging an adoption fee. My adoption fees are reasonable...less than $175. Many rescues charge much more than this. Pet stores and breeders charge triple this price, and more. All of my animals' vet bill are always $200 or more. I never make a profit. I never even break even. However, I do ALWAYS find homes for my animals on CRAIGSLIST. I have found WONDERFUL homes for all my rescued dogs and cats off of this incredible web site. ACCORDING TO CRAIGSLIST RULES, RESCUERS ARE ALLOWED TO CHARGE AN ADOPTION FEE! I AM NOT BREAKING CRAIGSLIST RULES! However, every time I post a 6-month-old puppy (that I recently rescued from euthanasia at the South L.A. shelter), my post gets flagged and removed. I keep reposting, but someone keeps flagging my posts, even though I am not breaking Craigslist rules - again: adoption fees for rescuers ARE ALLOWED. At this point, I feel the flagger is just harassing me for the fun of it. I keep asking the flagger to e-mail me, but they never do, which tells me they are just being mean, for fun. If I did not charge an adoption fee, I would have to retire from dog rescue, because I wouldn't be able to afford it. And Craigslist is the only web site that has given me so much success in finding new homes for dogs. So all this flagger is doing is slowing me down from finding this dog a new home, which makes it so that I don't have space to go get the red-listed dog who is waiting for me, so that dog will probably die, all because someone keeps flagging my post. SUGGESTIONS? PLEASE? Thank you!

Yep, we are saving money to work with a breeder because of our experiences with CL, actually. We were looking to help someone on CL trying to re-home their dog. We went to people's homes and met a few dogs, all of which were backyard breeders trying to re-home dogs that they couldn't breed anymore because they were too old. We have heard things like "I have to sell the dog because my daughter's birthday is coming up and we need gifts," "I tried breeding her, but it wasn't as 'fun' as I thought it would be", and "We didn't like this breed, so we're selling him intact to someone who will want to breed him". Seriously. we saw some scary sh*t, and funny that these posts weren't flagged by all those 'caring' flaggers out there. Since we did not want to support BYBs, we are now saving our pennies to work with an actual, showing, champion breeder to find a dog that works for us. CL obviously doesn't care about who is putting 'pets' on their forum. Other areas of CL don't bother me as much as this one, because these are live things CL is allowing on their site, to be pawned, traded, and pimped out (that's right, as many ads tout "un-altered", obviously trying to sell to someone who will BYB). I firmly believe CL either needs to take action in their pet forum, or needs to remove the pet forum altogether. It is offensive to living things to have a forum like this on CL.

Flaggers removed postings for shelter animals who had a limited amount of time left at a kill shelter. How sad it is that by flagging they LITERALLY changed the fate of a shelter animal. One who might have been saved, will now be euthanized.

I am sick to death of the flagging abuse going on. I am trying to help a poor homeless woman who found herself unable to care for her animals anymore. We took in the German shepherd with her ten newborn puppies, and a Beagle who has heartworms. We were just asking for a little help, and these sorry people flag us off within an hour of our post.

I posted this ad, it was flagged 15 times. I am not selling, breeding or doing anything else that is against Craigslist TOS: This is a large Parrot playground, it is brand new, and never used. It has multiple ladders, rings for a food and water bowl, as well as 2 wooden dowels for perching. This playground is $229.00 new. $50.00 takes it, first come, first served!

CL says a small adoption fee is OK. What is a small adoption fee? Clearly there are people who think anything over $200 is no longer a small fee. But it really is relative. For some people $500 is small. For some $5000 is small. I wonder then, why is CL being held hostage by a small group of nut jobs? It really is kind of crazy. And who are these angry, bitter people, lurking in the shadows doing all the flagging? Misguided do gooders or malicious devils? No doubt a little of both. They hide behind some notion of helping animals when all they are doing is preventing animals from finding homes: Hurting what they supposedly love. I am not sure who is worse, the person re-homing their animal for seemingly frivolous reasons, or the self righteous flagger sticking their nose where it doesn't belong. Either way, it is the animal that suffers. And it is sad.

I have posted ads on craigslist, and yes they were flagged a lot of times, I keep re-posting. I have gotten hateful emails, been called names and lies told about me on your site. These flaggers have no right to send anyone a hateful email, call them names, or post lies about someone they don't even know. Please get rid of the flag button, and find/train some trusted people to monitor your site. Please help with this problem, stop the flagging, PLEASE.

I've noticed the number of postings in the Vacaville/Fairfield area drop off in the last month. There are a few people who believe they have the right to appoint themselves the "Craigslist Police." Many people in this area now post in Sacramento. The vast majority of us know the difference between a real or fake ad. If flaggers have nothing better to do than police craigslist, then I suggest they get a life. While they try to figure out how to do that, they should LEAVE US NORMAL PEOPLE ALONE. WE HAVE NO USE FOR IDIOTS LIKE THEM!!!

What is wrong with the world today! I promise you his cause is legit and I am willing to meet with ANYONE face to face to prove it! I hope you don’t have children because KARMA can be a terrible thing! People post all day long on here about off the wall, crazy, ridiculous things...and you FLAGGED US!? WOW!

I went outta state to adopt a dog because my posting here LOOKING to adopt a dog kept getting flagged and removed. So now I will be driving out of state this weekend to bring my new dog home. And some Oregon dog whose owners are looking for a new forever home.... are still looking and the dog is still waiting for someone to love him or her.

I used to think Craigslist was a good idea. Yet every time you go on to a section and post someone thinks they have the right to flag down every post they do not like. All it does is upset others and force them to re post. There are people on craigslist that do it out of boredom and it needs to be stopped.

Can someone do something about this guy? I put a post in the wanted section asking for people who had particular items and were no longer using them, to let me know and I'd be happy to go get them for our vacation to Yellowstone. I asked for binoculars, spotting scopes, telescopes, etc. Here's the message I got in return: “Wait until you have enough money and go BUY some like most people do!” Can anyone take this rude butthead off Craigslist?

My daughter found a dog dodging cars. I posted him and kept an updated post on what we found out about him before offering him up to an approved home free to someone that would alter, vaccinate and license him. I was flagged. He has been reposted on Craigslist but sadly the site has gone downhill. So I am turning to other sites. I expect to stop using craigslist all together and I have been referring folks to other sites such as Kijji.com and adoption.swiftreport.net, rather than to craigslist. The new president of craigslist really should know this since this kind of word of mouth is very powerful in the world of business. From what I hear Craig no longer runs the site and if the new guy wants the site to stay strong and reputable I think he should really get it together and pay attention to what those such as myself have to say about craigslist!

Craigslist Vandalism - Do you realize what these people do? They stalk people's personal information to send to local authorities on minor infractions like a 4 month old puppy without shots (normal for low income people) for neglect to the local Animal Control. This is INSANE. Besides the fact that they are using craigslist staffs' names such as "Jim Buckmaster" ,"Craig Newmark" ,and "Clint Powell" thinking that it is funny and great entertainment. This is ABUSE OF YOUR SITE. Many people have alerted you to this, lists of GOOD ADS are being removed based on agendas and personal issues. Another individual I know has alerted you to the HARASSING emails to her rescue. Why do you ALLOW it to continue? It is disgusting to see you allow it to continue; as if you it doesn't matter even with SOLID proof right in front of you probably close to EVERY SINGLE DAY and more and more victims come out of the woodwork. Do something for god's sake!
